ILACHE is a statewide organization comprised of concerned educators who assist in advocating and addressing the educational needs of Latinos.

The Mission of ILACHE
  • To promote understanding and to advocate on behalf of the needs of the Illinois Latino population as they pertain to higher education
  • To provide a statewide forum for Latino and non-Latino educators and community persons with a professional and/or personal commitment to Latino issues in higher education.

Why is a Latino Higher Education Agenda Needed?
  • Nationally, in 1998 only 11% of Latinos had completed four years of college or more.
  • In 1999, only 10% of Latinos in the state of Illinois were enrolled in a college or university.
  • In 1999, 14% of Latinos in the state of Illinois were enrolled in a community college.
  • In 1996, less than 3% of all full-time college faculty were Latino, while Latinos received only 3.5% of all doctorates awarded that year.
  • Latinos continue to be over-enrolled in community colleges with only a fraction transferring and graduating from baccalaureate programs.
  • The lack of financial aid discourages Latinos from attending college and increases the economic burden of those who do.
  • Latinos are the fastest growing population. The 2000 census figures show this.
  • Latino population growth at 58%, accounting for 35.3% of the total population.
  • Latinos have grown 41.1% in the state of Illinois.
