The Mission of
ILACHE
- To provide a
statewide forum for Latino and non-Latino educators and community
persons with a professional and/or personal commitment to Latino issues
in higher education.
Why is a Latino Higher
Education Agenda Needed?
- In 1999, only 10% of Latinos in the state of Illinois
were enrolled in a college or university.
- In 1999, 14% of Latinos in the state of Illinois were
enrolled in a community college.
- In 1996, less than 3% of all full-time college faculty
were Latino, while Latinos received only 3.5% of all doctorates awarded
that year.
- Latinos continue to be over-enrolled in community
colleges with only a fraction transferring and graduating from
baccalaureate programs.
- The lack of financial aid discourages Latinos from
attending college and increases the economic burden of those who do.
- Latinos are the fastest growing population. The 2000
census figures show this.
- Latino population growth at 58%, accounting for 35.3% of
the total population.
- Latinos have grown 41.1% in the state of
Illinois.
