PREPARING LATIN@ LEADERS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION.
The ILACHE Leadership Institute (ILI) has as its main goal to prepare Latin@s to become more effective leaders in colleges, communities and the professions.


ILI’s mission is to promote professional growth and prepare Latino leaders to become effective community builders and strong advocates for higher education and beyond


ABOUT
The Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education Leadership Institute (ILI) provides seminars throughout ten months of the academic year to promote professional growth and prepare Latino leaders to become strong community builders in higher education and beyond. The seminars will begin on August 2016 and end in June 2017 Participants will be required to attend monthly Saturday seminars from 9am-1pm for 10 months. The seminars include a range of topics related to Latino policy, advocacy and skills necessary for Latinos in any leadership position. The program will admit a maximum of 15 students in its first cohort. The application process will be competitive. Students admitted to the program will be required to attend all seminars and meet with a designated mentor selected from the leadership professional track. The ILI leadership program incorporates a two tiered model that includes active organizing in the higher education community. Students are required to attend all sessions and volunteer at the ILACHE Annual Conference.

TWO TRACKS

1.      Professional Track – Entry level and mid-level management
2.      Student Track – Currently enrolled undergraduate students (sophomores and above)

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

  • Monthly Saturday seminars are from 9:00am to 1:00pm
  • Topics include agenda creation, advocacy, skill building, and policy knowledge necessary for Latino leaders
  • This initiative offers a student-focused track and a professional track
  •  A maximum of 15 leaders will be admitted into each program track
  •  Students will be matched to a mentor from the professional track
  • Materials will be provided to participants in order to prepare for each leadership session
  • Leaders will volunteer and/or present at ILACHE’s annual professional conference

  • Increase your understanding of the higher education system to become a better advocate
  • Effectively navigate one’s work environment while remaining ethically rooted
  • Develop cultural competency skills 
  • Share experiences that can facilitate political empowerment  
  • Understand the role of Latino professional organizations such as ILACHE and increase your integration into its structure and organizational initiatives to advance a collective social justice agenda

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

  • Attend all 10 monthly seminars (Saturdays 9-2)
  • Meet with designated mentor/mentee each month
  • Complete all assignments prior to each session
  • Enrich your institutional or professional leadership through work on a community building project
  • Become an active ILACHE member including volunteering or presenting at its annual conference

August to May (one Saturday per month – ten sessions); Time: 9 am-2 pm

COST

$1,000 per person (Professional Track) and $500 per person (Undergraduate Student Track)

ADMISSION PROCESS

  • Must complete (and submit) the ILACHE Leadership Application by July 31, 2016.
  • If invited, complete the interview process
  • Selected applicants must provide their deposit no later than two weeks prior to the first seminar
